OUR PEOPLE

Mike Ferrugia
Corey Ryan

Unless you live in New Zealand it’s incredibly hard to find the breadth and detail of the wines we make. Red Hut is a passion project to bring these wines to the world.

Mike

Mike Farrugia is a passionate wine professional based on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, where he runs his own import and distribution business, Stone Pony Wines. Born in Sydney and raised in New Zealand from the age of five, Mike has a deep-rooted connection to the land and its wines. Frustrated by the oversimplification of New Zealand wine in global markets, what he cheekily calls “Bullshit Bay”,  Mike co-founded Red Hut to help wine lovers discover the country’s true diversity. Through Red Hut, he aims to showcase the character of New Zealand’s unique sub-regions. Outside of wine, Mike enjoys paddle boarding, surfing, collecting old vinyl records, tennis, and golf.

Corey

Corey Ryan is a Barossa Valley native whose deep connection to New Zealand was forged during his time as Chief Winemaker at Villa Maria from 2003 to 2008. With over 30 years of experience crafting expressive, site-driven wines across New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, Corey brings a rare trans-Tasman perspective to every project. Red Hut marks a return to his New Zealand roots through this collaborative venture with longtime friend and colleague Mike Farrugia, driven by a shared passion for authenticity and regional expression. Corey was named New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2007 and was a finalist for Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2016.
